Understand the local food scene

Belgrade combines traditional kafanas with contemporary restaurants, grill shops, bakeries, international kitchens and an active specialty-coffee scene.

What to try

Look for ćevapi, pljeskavica, sarma, karađorđeva šnicla, grilled river fish and seasonal vegetable dishes. Portions can be generous, and many menus are designed for sharing.

Breakfast and bakeries

A neighbourhood bakery is an easy local breakfast. Burek with yoghurt is a classic choice, while many cafés serve longer brunch menus.

Traditional kafanas

Kafanas combine food, drinks and often live music. Skadarlija is the best-known area, but traditional restaurants can be found throughout the city.

Reservations and payment

Popular venues can fill up on Friday and Saturday evenings. Reserve directly when possible and check whether cards are accepted; carrying some Serbian dinars is useful.
